African Evaluation Database (AfrED)
Background
The African Evaluation Database (AfrED) was initially developed in 2015 to meet the growing demand for evaluation evidence and research in Africa. The two collaborating organisations, the Centre for Learning on Evaluation and Results, Anglophone Africa (CLEAR-AA) hosted by the University of the Witwatersrand and the Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST) hosted by Stellenbosch University, saw the need for a database to move forward the research agenda in the evaluation field on the African continent.
What is AfrED?
The AfrED is a public repository of commissioned evaluation reports, academic articles on evaluation, and Masters and PhD theses on evaluation conducted in Anglophone African countries from 2005 to 2020. The database captures basic bibliographic and other related metadata on selected country academic and commissioned evaluations conducted in African countries including Botswana, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, South Sudan, Swaziland (Eswatini), Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The repository’s contents include evaluation articles, evaluation reports and dissertations.
What does it aim to do?
The primary goal of the AfrED was the construction and population of an interactive knowledge database with respect to evaluation reports and studies in Anglophone Africa. The construction of the AfrED database has provided some initial steps in creating a foundation of information to analyse in the making of research and capacity building decisions. It has the potential to propel the development of the evaluation sector in Africa in the right direction.
